I am based in the countryside near Kilkenny City, Ireland. I work mainly in native Irish timbers (Oak, Yew, Beech, Hawthorn and Ash). I have been involved in wood-creations since 2005 but there is a family history in wood-working that goes back to my dad, Eddie and granddad James. My brother Seamus is an accomplished wood-craftsman who has excelled in sculpture, furniture restoration and even guitar building. The skills acquired in the last few years were meant for me and not to go by me. I work on an old Union Graduate lathe for my bowls, dishes and plates. For sculpting, I use mainly hand-chisels and a band-saw. Occasionally, I produce unique pieces combining turning and sculpting.
Wooden kitchenware is not cheap but please consider this...
... It’s durable. Drop a delph bowl on a tiled floor and it will break. Do the same with a wooden one and it won’t. Plastic is cheaper but doesn't age very gracefully. It's also not as hygienic as one might be led to believe. Bacteria and germs multiply on it. Wood is the a more hygienic option.
Whilst the initial outlay is expensive, I am confident that my bowls will pay off in the long run. Look at butchers' counters! They just don't wear out, do they? A wooden vessel will last for generations. Even under extreme abuse, wood may chip or scratch slightly but these blemishes can be easily repaired. Even if left unrepaired, these features will form their own charm. Whilst fashions are so changeable, when you buy wood, you are getting a timeless artifact.
As well as all this wood-work, I play many music styles on a variety of stringed instruments. When looking in my shop, don't forget to check out the CD releases ;-)
More photos will be listed in the near future so do visit again :-)
